In the recent past, there has been a lot of controversy and attention to international relations as it involves several countries which are usually involved in conflict or war. It is important to understand what an international relations is and how these two concepts can be used effectively.
This article aims at defining what an international relations is, who one is and what its importance is. This piece also looks at some issues relating to international relations like terrorism, cyberterrorism, and global warming.
What Is An International Relations?
An international relation is basically the study of the relationships between different nations. These interactions can be in economic and political terms but can also include military operations.
The United Nations Security Council was created with the aim of developing an understanding of various world powers’ interests and objectives to make sure that peace and stability prevails in the whole world. Many people from around the globe believe that this was a great way or a great idea, but many others see it just a group of politicians with no real power.
The UN, however, still represents some of the most influential forces in influencing international affairs. This has led many to question the legitimacy of international organizations. It’s not just about their power because it also includes the prestige that comes along with that. If you ask for help in a situation that needs it, then if you need peace with Russia, then you have help and a peaceful resolution which is the same thing in other cases. So, how can it then become a threat in the first place?
One definition that really stands out, according to Webster’s dictionary, is “The act of engaging in an activity or undertaking with the intent or purpose of causing harm or injury” (Oxford English Dictionary). Which means, then, that international relations involve a set of agreements that bring nations together at several levels? There are five main areas where international relations are applied.
They are diplomacy, defense, international law, culture and public relations. Diplomacy is when the leaders or government officials of different governments meet to discuss a specific topic. Defense is when there is a war that takes place within the country, for example, India, Japan, Vietnam, Korea all have a form of weapons.
A treaty may be made which declares their agreement on some matters to avoid any chances of dispute over some matter. International law is when a nation tries put something into another nation’s law which may seem illegal but they do so because it is the best way for them and their government to act. Culture is all about sharing some things like beliefs and traditions with other people. Public relations are all about building strong relationships with others by presenting a positive image of it.
International diplomacy makes sense today, especially in developing countries. Developed states can access technology to run different parts of the economy without being physically present. However, there is a huge gap between the rich and the poor which requires diplomacy. As globalization spreads to more and more countries, this becomes necessary to solve. For instance, the US, which has always been open to new ideas for diplomacy as long as they are going to benefit its citizens.
What Are Some Issues Involved With International Relations?
There are a few issues which pertain to international relations but they are mostly focused on the way the countries work. From the Middle East to Africa and the EU and Canada, several issues arise. All of these will require urgent action or changes now in order for the progress to continue. Terrorism is perhaps one of the biggest threats in our daily lives, but we cannot fight terrorism alone, instead, it is better when we have allies who will stand by us as well.
For example, Israel had a massive attack last week, killing people and injuring a lot. But even though they are attacked by the terrorist, we all know that there is not enough strength in the world for them to protect themselves because if they did, then maybe we could, too, but we would not stand and stand for what? We would go our own ways and kill each other. Even worse would be if we became aggressive over a certain issue when it is not our country and the cause would not be able to gain much sympathy from it.
Then again, sometimes other countries are not willing to give up their sovereignty either because they have fought or lost in wars. Or even people want a certain kind of freedom which may be unfair to them. This kind of behavior is a big problem and must be dealt with swiftly. That does not mean that they have right to decide for itself what kind of freedom it will be, otherwise, when they can try to force something upon another person, they can take advantage of it too.
Another area which could be improved by having allies is cyberterrorism. According to a report published by Cybersecurity Ventures (Cyber Ventures), cybercrime will account for approximately 50 million USD in 2020, which mainly due to the growing use of virtual machine and cloud based services. The research says that if there were to be cybercrime in 2019, its impact would be 40% bigger, the majority of this being data theft.
Now it seems as though computers have taken over the internet and are a primary target of crimes. People have seen that hackers and criminals can easily access information and steal it for personal and/or corporate uses. To further complicate things, terrorists also have gained control over Iota devices as soon as lockdown orders are lifted.
The UK government announced its plans of creating smart cities where they can monitor security, and for those living in these areas, they would create an electronic ID to record location as well with every single movement of people. Because of all this information that we have available from machines, we cannot predict when we will be fully connected with machines and when all human identity will disappear.
Moreover, using these kinds of systems can lead to a lot of damage and consequences if anything goes wrong. The fact that hackers are getting into our networks means that we are becoming very vulnerable and this is why people should be careful from using such technologies at home and not share things with friends because it is easy.
It seems clear to see that cyberterrorism is affecting almost every aspect of life today. Internet thefts, credit card frauds, social engineering scams etc. I think this is the reason why internet must be banned and people must have physical boundaries to prevent any kind of bad activity.
While the government deals with dealing with foreign interference that might affect our economy, human beings should handle everything related to cyberterrorism. Only recently, China signed a deal with the US to develop 5G technology in the future. It is expected that this technology is set to create a faster connection with wireless phones and laptops, while removing the cables between the towers of mobile network communication. Yes, it is true, it does save millions of dollars and many consumers do enjoy this benefit.
However, the possibility of that it is also a threat for some countries such as China in the short term is that the infrastructure of telecom infrastructure will be built in such a way that it only allows operators to connect to the base station but not to talk. And this cannot be done without giving way to people who do not know the hardware, software and firmware of it.
Not only that, the possibility of hacking into your computer in the future is pretty good, especially if you have the opportunity to build your device yourself. Due to the current technological developments, this is a common scenario. Just imagine a world of AI and automation. How would people feel after that? It could change their perspective of life.
The World Economic Forum thinks that COVID-19 is threatening the economic outlook of a large portion of the global population, especially those in advanced economies. A number of countries are already facing serious uncertainty and economic uncertainty since the outbreak of this outbreak, especially in Europe. While some countries are responding to this type of response, a small percentage is doing nothing, leaving many to suffer.
